Bhringraj (Eclipta prostrata / Eclipta alba) — also called Maka, False Daisy or Trailing Eclipta — is Ayurveda's most celebrated herb for hair health. Called "Kesharaja" (King of Hair) in ancient texts, bhringraj is the primary ingredient in traditional Ayurvedic hair oils (Bhringraj tail) used across India for centuries to prevent hair fall, promote hair growth, prevent premature greying and strengthen hair roots. Beyond hair, bhringraj is a powerful liver tonic, antipyretic and digestive herb. The excellent news: bhringraj is one of India's most easily grown medicinal herbs — it grows wild across the country near water bodies and thrives in containers with minimal care.

🌱 How to Grow Bhringraj at Home
Bhringraj घर पर कैसे Grow करें
🌱 Soil, Container & Light
Soil, Container और Light
- Moisture-retaining rich soil: 45% cocopeat + 30% vermicompost + 15% garden soil + 10% perlite. High cocopeat for maximum moisture retention. Bhringraj in nutrient-rich moist soil produces the most wedelolactone (active compound) — this is one herb where rich feeding directly improves medicinal quality.
- Light — adaptable: Full sun produces more compact, potent plants. Partial shade (3–4 hours direct sun) also works well. Bhringraj tolerates the full range of Indian light conditions from full terrace sun to filtered balcony shade.
- Annual self-seeding: Bhringraj flowers produce abundant small seeds. Allow some plants to complete seed cycle — scatter seeds in pot and surrounding area. You'll never need to buy or sow seeds again once established.
💧 Watering & Care
Watering और Care
- Keep consistently moist: Water every 2–3 days in summer. Daily in peak summer (April–June). Monsoon — no supplemental watering needed outdoors. Never let soil dry completely — wilting causes leaf drop and reduces medicinal quality of the harvest.
- Monthly liquid fertilizer: Vermicompost tea or dilute NPK at half strength monthly. Bhringraj is a moderate feeder — monthly feeding is sufficient. Over-fertilizing with nitrogen produces excess foliage but reduces medicinal compound concentration.
- Pinch flowering tips to extend leaf harvest: Bhringraj transitions to flowering and seed production relatively quickly (60–80 days). Pinching flower buds extends the vegetative leaf-production phase. However — allowing one or two plants to flower and seed is important for the self-seeding cycle.
✂️ Harvesting & Bhringraj Hair Oil — Home Preparation
Harvesting और Bhringraj Hair Oil — Home Preparation
- Harvest whole plant or leaves — just before flowering: Medicinal potency is highest just before or at early flowering. Harvest upper 2/3 of plant by cutting — regrowth from base in 3–4 weeks. Fresh plant has characteristic dark green color that produces the famous dark stain when crushed — this dark pigment (wedelolactone) is the active compound.
- Classic Bhringraj Tail (Hair Oil) — Home Recipe:
1. Wash and dry fresh bhringraj leaves and stems completely (any moisture causes oil to spoil)
2. Grind to a coarse paste or chop finely
3. Heat 200ml pure coconut oil (or sesame oil) in heavy bottom vessel on very low flame
4. Add bhringraj paste — it will sizzle initially as moisture evaporates
5. Stir continuously on lowest flame for 30–40 minutes until moisture completely evaporated and paste turns dark (almost black)
6. Strain through cloth while hot. Cool completely. Store in glass bottle — 6 months shelf life - Quick infused oil method: Pack dried bhringraj in glass jar, cover with coconut oil. Keep in warm sunny spot 4–6 weeks. Strain. Less potent than cooked oil but sufficient for regular use.
- Bhringraj juice: Blend fresh plant with water, strain — 2 tbsp daily for liver health, hair growth support and fever.
- Dried powder: Dry complete plant in shade 7–10 days, grind fine. 1/2 tsp with water or milk twice daily. Mix with coconut oil for quick hair mask.
🔧 Common Problems & Fixes
| Problem | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| 🌿 Plant bolts to flower quickly | Normal — annual plant | Pinch flower buds to extend leaf harvest. Allow some to seed for next crop. |
| 🟡 Yellow leaves | Underwatering or nutrient deficiency | Water more frequently. Monthly liquid fertilizer. |
| 🐛 Leaf miner damage | Leaf mining insects — common on bhringraj | Remove affected leaves. Neem oil spray preventive. |
| 🌿 Wilting despite watering | Root rot from waterlogged pot | Improve drainage. Reduce standing water in saucer. |
| 🌱 No germination from seeds | Old seeds or insufficient warmth | Use fresh seeds. Sow in April–June when soil temperature above 25°C. |
