Cocopeat (coir peat) is made from coconut husk fibers and is the most important component in modern potting mixes. It retains moisture while allowing excellent aeration, is pH neutral, lightweight, disease-free and renewable. Available in compressed blocks at Indian nurseries for ₹40–80. Soak the block in water for 20–30 minutes before use — it expands 5–6 times its compressed size.

Perlite is volcanic glass expanded by heat — tiny white beads that improve drainage and aeration without retaining water. Cannot be fully substituted, but coarse river sand works as a partial replacement (use 1.5× the perlite amount). Never use beach sand — it contains salt. Never use fine sand — it actually worsens drainage by filling air pockets. Perlite is available at nurseries and online for ₹80–150/kg.

Refresh potting mix every 12–18 months. Old mix loses structure over time — it compacts, loses aeration, depletes nutrients and may harbor root pathogens. Signs it's time to refresh: water pools on surface and drains slowly, plant seems unhealthy despite good care, soil looks grey and dense. Best time to repot and refresh soil is early spring (February–March in India) when plants resume active growth.
