Rubber Plant (Ficus elastica) is one of the most striking and most forgiving large indoor plants available — its large, glossy, deep green or burgundy leaves on an upright stem create a dramatic architectural statement that improves with every passing year as the plant grows taller and more tree-like. Native to tropical South and Southeast Asia including Northeast India, the rubber plant was historically commercially important for natural rubber production before synthetic rubber replaced it. Today it is prized purely as an ornamental — one of the easiest large indoor plants to maintain in Indian conditions with its remarkable tolerance of low light, irregular watering and indoor neglect.

  • Wipe leaves for maximum glossiness: Rubber plant's large glossy leaves are its main attraction — but they collect dust rapidly which dulls the natural shine. Wipe monthly with a damp cloth. A drop of coconut oil on a cloth gives an extra shine boost. Clean leaves also photosynthesize more efficiently.
  • Notching for branching: Rubber plant naturally grows as a single straight stem. To encourage branching — make a small notch (1/3 through the stem) just above a leaf node. Apply rooting hormone to the notch. A new branch emerges from this point. Notching 2-3 places creates a bushier, more attractive plant.
  • Milky sap caution: All Ficus elastica produce milky latex when cut or damaged — wear gloves when pruning. Rinse cuts with lukewarm water to stop sap flow. Sap causes skin rash and is toxic if ingested. Keep away from pets and children.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Leaf drop causes: (1) Moving plant to new location — Ficus highly sensitive to relocation. Drooping and leaf drop for 2-3 weeks is normal after moving. Find position and don't move again. (2) Overwatering. (3) Cold draft or temperature below 10°C. (4) Root rot. Stabilize conditions — new leaves emerge within 4-6 weeks after shock recovery.
Stem cuttings: 15-20 cm cutting with 2-3 leaves, let latex dry 30 minutes, rooting hormone apply, moist cocopeat mein — 4-6 weeks mein roots. Wear gloves. Air layering — most reliable for large branches: score stem, apply rooting hormone, wrap moist sphagnum moss, seal with plastic wrap — roots visible in 4-8 weeks, then cut and pot.
Burgundy aur variegated varieties need bright indirect light to maintain color. In low light they revert toward green. Move to brighter position — new leaves will show correct color. Dust on leaves also dulls appearance significantly — monthly wiping restores natural gloss and color vibrancy immediately.
