Snake Plant (Dracaena trifasciata, formerly Sansevieria trifasciata) is India's most popular low-maintenance indoor plant — the one plant that survives complete neglect, thrives in low light and purifies air while doing so. Its upright, sword-shaped leaves with distinctive yellow or silver-grey banding make it one of the most architecturally striking indoor plants available in India. Known as Mother-in-Law's Tongue in English and Naag Patta or Naag Champa in Hindi, the snake plant has earned its reputation as India's most indestructible indoor plant — because it genuinely is.

⭐ Why Snake Plant is Perfect for Indian Homes

🌑
Survives Low Light
Snake plant tolerates genuinely low light conditions — it will survive (though grow slowly) in north-facing rooms with minimal natural light. This makes it one of very few plants that actually works in dark Indian apartment interiors.
💧
Extreme Drought Tolerance
Water every 3–4 weeks in winter, every 2 weeks in summer. Snake plant's thick succulent leaves store water — it survives longer without watering than almost any other houseplant. Perfect for Indian families who travel frequently.
🌬️
NASA Top Air Purifier
One of NASA's highest-rated air purifying plants — removes formaldehyde, benzene, trichloroethylene and xylene. Unique among houseplants: releases oxygen at NIGHT (CAM photosynthesis) making it ideal for bedrooms.
🏢
Best Office Plant
Snake plant thrives under fluorescent office lighting with no natural light and weeks of neglect. India's most popular office plant — handles AC rooms, irregular watering and low light simultaneously.

  • Watering is the only way to kill it: Overwatering causes root rot which kills snake plant within weeks. Let soil dry COMPLETELY between waterings — push finger 5 cm into soil, if any moisture remains — wait. When in doubt, wait 3 more days.
  • Never water in the crown: Never pour water directly into the central rosette of leaves — water only around the base of the pot. Water sitting in the crown causes rot at the base of leaves.
  • Terracotta pot preferred: Terracotta's breathable walls help soil dry faster — reducing root rot risk. Avoid large pots — snake plant prefers snug containers.

🎉 Fun Facts about Snake Plant

  • Night oxygen producer: Unlike most plants, snake plant performs CAM photosynthesis — absorbs CO₂ and releases oxygen at night. This makes it the ideal bedroom plant, genuinely improving sleep air quality.
  • Renamed in 2017: Botanically reclassified from Sansevieria to Dracaena in 2017 based on DNA analysis. Many nurseries and plant lovers still use the old name Sansevieria — both are correct.
  • Bowstring use: The common name "Viper's Bowstring Hemp" comes from its historical use — the strong leaf fibres were used to make bowstrings in West Africa.
  • Vastu approved: Snake plant is considered auspicious in Vastu Shastra when placed at the entrance or south-east corner of homes — said to absorb negative energy.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Snake plant slow grower hai — ek naya leaf 4–8 weeks mein aata hai growing season mein. Low light mein aur bhi slow. Bright indirect light mein growth faster hoti hai but overall yeh fast-growing plant nahi hai.
Yellow leaves = almost always overwatering ya root rot. Soil check karo — agar moist hai toh watering band karo aur 2 weeks wait karo. Agar leaves mushy hain — unpot karo, roots check karo, rotten roots trim karo, fresh dry mix mein repot karo.
Bilkul! Snake plant bedroom ke liye ideal hai — raat ko oxygen release karta hai (CAM photosynthesis), low light tolerate karta hai aur negligible watering chahiye. India ka best bedroom plant.
3 methods: (1) Division — multiple crowns ko alag karo repotting time pe. (2) Leaf cutting — 5–8 cm sections moist soil ya water mein. (3) Pups/offsets — base se nikalne wale baby plants ko alag pot mein lagao. Division sabse fast method hai.
Haan — lekin rarely aur unpredictably. Mature snake plant occasionally small white fragrant flowers produce karta hai on a long spike. Flowering generally stress trigger se hoti hai — root bound condition ya extended dry period.
