Portulaca / नौ बजे का फूल — India का most summer-proof flower। 45°C में thrive, jewel-toned colors, surface sow, हर साल self-seeds।
Portulaca (Portulaca grandiflora) — Moss Rose or Nau Baje ka Phool — is India's most summer-proof flowering plant, thriving in conditions that kill most other flowers: peak Indian summer heat (40°C+), direct blazing sun, sandy poor soil and irregular watering. Its succulent-like stems and brilliant jewel-toned flowers in pink, red, orange, yellow, white and magenta make it one of the most colorful summer garden plants available in India. The common name "Nau Baje ka Phool" (Nine O'Clock Flower) describes its habit of opening fully only when the sun is bright — closing on cloudy days and at night.

💧 Portulaca Care — India Specific
- Surface sow — seeds need light to germinate: Portulaca seeds are tiny like dust — scatter on moist soil surface and do NOT cover. Press gently to ensure soil contact. Germination 7–14 days. Keep moist (mist, don't pour) until germinated. Once established — extremely drought tolerant.
- Avoid monsoon waterlogging: Portulaca's only vulnerability — prolonged wet waterlogged soil causes immediate root rot. Ensure excellent drainage. In heavy monsoon areas, grow in raised containers or elevated beds. Reduce/stop watering during continuous rain periods.
- Self-seeds for free plants next year: Allow some flowers to set seed at end of season. Seeds fall and self-sow — next summer portulaca reappears in same spot without replanting. Over years, a well-seeded bed becomes permanent with zero effort.
🥗 Portulaca oleracea — The Edible Cousin
Portulaca oleracea — Kulfa Saag — Edible Cousin
- Kulfa — India's most nutritious weed: Portulaca oleracea (Kulfa in Hindi) — the common garden weed — is actually one of the most nutritious leafy vegetables available in India. It contains the highest plant-based omega-3 fatty acids of any leaf vegetable — more than spinach.
- Used in Indian cooking: Kulfa saag cooked like spinach in North India and Rajasthan — stir-fried with garlic and spices or added to dal. Tangy succulent flavor. Considered a cooling summer vegetable in Ayurveda.
- Completely different from ornamental portulaca: Kulfa (P. oleracea) has tiny yellow flowers and fleshy paddle-shaped leaves — very different from the large-flowered P. grandiflora. Both are the same family but different species.
