Dieffenbachia (Dieffenbachia seguine) — Dumb Cane — is one of the most popular and most dramatically patterned large indoor plants — its big, lush leaves come in striking combinations of green, cream, yellow and white patterns that make each variety look uniquely painted. The common name "Dumb Cane" refers to the plant's most notorious characteristic: the sap causes intense swelling and temporary inability to speak if the mouth or tongue is exposed to it. Despite this concerning toxicity, Dieffenbachia remains extremely popular as an indoor plant because of its large size, dramatic coloring and remarkable tolerance of indoor conditions including low light and irregular care.

  • ALWAYS wear gloves when handling: Dieffenbachia sap contains raphide crystals of calcium oxalate. If any sap contacts mouth, tongue or eyes — severe burning, swelling and temporary speech loss results. Always wear thick gloves when pruning, taking cuttings or repotting. Wash hands thoroughly. Keep completely away from children and pets.
  • Leggy plant restoration: As Dieffenbachia grows, lower leaves naturally drop leaving a bare cane with leaves only at the top. Rejuvenate by cutting the bare cane into 15-20 cm sections (wear gloves) — each section can be laid horizontally on moist mix and will produce new plants from dormant buds. The original top can be rooted as a cutting.
  • Variegation maintenance: Cream and white variegated varieties need more light than solid green forms. In low light, variegated leaves become more green as the plant produces more chlorophyll. Brighter indirect light maintains the cream-white patterns.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Immediate action: (1) Rinse mouth thoroughly with cold water for 10-15 minutes. (2) Do NOT swallow. (3) Apply cold compress to lips/tongue for swelling. (4) If swelling is severe or breathing affected — emergency medical attention immediately. (5) If eyes exposed — flush with clean water 15-20 minutes, seek medical attention. Prevention: always wear gloves, keep away from children and pets.
Drooping causes: (1) Underwatering — most common. Water immediately and thoroughly. Recovery within hours. (2) Overwatering and root rot — soil waterlogged. Let dry, check roots. (3) Cold temperature shock. (4) Repotting stress. Dieffenbachia's dramatic droop when underwatered is similar to Peace Lily — water immediately when you see it.
WEAR GLOVES. Three methods: (1) Stem tip cutting — 15-20 cm, let latex dry 30 minutes, root in moist cocopeat. (2) Cane sections — cut bare stem into 15 cm pieces, lay on moist mix or plant upright — shoots emerge from nodes in 4-6 weeks. (3) Air layering — score stem, wrap sphagnum moss, seal — roots in 4-8 weeks, then cut and pot. All methods reliable in Indian warmth.
