Commercial sunflower farming — KBSH 44 high-oil hybrid, bee pollination for 30% more yield, boron nutrition and confectionery market premium.
Sunflower commercial farming — KBSH 44 hybrid, bee pollination से 30% more yield, boron nutrition और confectionery market premium।
Sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is India's third-largest oilseed crop and the most versatile — it can be grown in both Kharif (July) and Rabi (October) seasons, giving farmers two income opportunities per year. India produces sunflower primarily in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha and Bihar. Commercial sunflower farming produces two distinct products: sunflower oil (24–40% oil content depending on hybrid) — one of India's most consumed cooking oils — and confectionery/birdseed sunflower where head size and seed quality command exceptional premium pricing (Rs.8,000–15,000/q vs Rs.5,000–6,000/q for oil varieties).
Sunflower India का third-largest oilseed crop है और most versatile — Kharif और Rabi दोनों seasons में grow होता है। Karnataka, AP, Maharashtra lead। Sunflower oil (24–40%) और confectionery/birdseed sunflower (Rs.8,000–15,000/q premium) — दो distinct products।

🌍 Climate & Soil Requirements
Climate और Soil
- Temperature: 20–35°C. Sunflower is the broadest temperature-range oilseed — grows from winter Rabi (Karnataka, AP) to summer Kharif (Bihar, Odisha, Maharashtra) equally well. Head development needs dry weather — excessive rain at maturity causes head rot.
- Rainfall/Irrigation: 500–700mm. 3–4 critical irrigations needed in non-monsoon season. Kharif crop depends on monsoon. Rabi crop needs irrigation at 30, 55, 75 and 90 DAS.
- Soil: Well-drained loamy to sandy loam, pH 6.0–7.5. Sunflower is highly boron-responsive — boron deficiency is common and causes hollow stalk and poor head fill. Avoid waterlogged soils.
- Best states: Karnataka (Dharwad, Haveri, Bellary), AP (Kurnool, Anantapur, Prakasam), Maharashtra, Odisha, Bihar (spring sunflower).
🌱 Sowing Guide
🧪 Fertilizer, Irrigation & Pollination
Fertilizer, Irrigation और Pollination
| Nutrient | Rate (kg/ha) | Application |
|---|---|---|
| N (Nitrogen) | 80–100 | 1/3 basal + 1/3 at 30 DAS + 1/3 at 55 DAS |
| P (Phosphorus) | 60–80 | Full basal |
| K (Potassium) | 40–60 | Full basal |
| S (Sulphur) | 40 | Basal — critical for oil quality |
| B (Boron) | 1.5–2 kg (borax) | Basal + 0.2% foliar at bud stage |
- 4 critical irrigations (Rabi): At sowing (for germination), knee-high stage (30 DAS), bud initiation (55 DAS) and seed filling (75–80 DAS). Never irrigate at flowering — reduces bee activity and pollination.
- Hand cross-pollination: Rub two sunflower heads together or use a soft brush to transfer pollen between plants. Do this 3 times at 2-day intervals at peak flowering. Increases seed setting 15–25% especially in isolated or wind-calm conditions.
🐛 Pest & Disease Management
| Problem | Symptoms | Management |
|---|---|---|
| 🍄 Downy Mildew (Plasmopara) | Yellow patches with white growth below leaf — systemic infection, stunted plants | Metalaxyl seed treatment (6g/kg). Resistant hybrids (MSFH 17). Remove volunteer sunflowers. |
| 🍄 Head Rot (Sclerotinia) | White mycelium on developing head, seed decay | Avoid overhead irrigation at heading. Iprodione spray. Crop rotation. |
| 🐦 Bird Damage (Parakeets) | Head seeds eaten — major loss in ripening stage | Bird scaring (reflective tape, hawk kites, noise makers). Net covers on heads. Timely harvest. |
| 🪲 Capitulum Borer | Larvae boring into head — Maharashtra pest | Endosulfan or Profenophos at bud stage. |
| 🦟 Aphids on heads | Colonies on developing seeds, sticky honeydew | Dimethoate spray before heading — not during flowering. |
🌻 Harvesting & Products
Harvesting और Products
- Harvest at 30–35% seed moisture: Back of head turns brown-yellow, bracts dry, seeds firm and plump. Cut heads with 30 cm stem at 85–90% physical maturity. Don't wait for field drying — bird damage accelerates at maturity.
- Threshing and drying: Rub heads against wire mesh or use power thresher. Dry seeds to 8–9% moisture for safe storage. Adequate drying prevents aflatoxin and deterioration.
- Confectionery vs oil market: Large-seeded varieties (Aditya, Russian Giant) fetch Rs.8,000–15,000/q at confectionery snack companies. Striped large seeds command highest premium. Oil varieties: Rs.5,800–7,280/q at oil mills.
