Lemongrass farming — Pragati/Cauvery varieties, 4–6 harvests/year, steam distillation और Rs.800–1500/kg oil market।

Lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus) is one of India's most profitable essential oil crops — a perennial grass that produces aromatic leaves rich in citral oil used in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, food flavoring, aromatherapy and mosquito repellent products. India is the world's largest lemongrass oil producer and exporter. Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Kerala, Karnataka and Maharashtra lead production. Once established, lemongrass requires minimal care yet yields 4–6 harvests per year for 5–8 years before replanting.

🌿 Why Farm Lemongrass?

💰
High Value Essential Oil
Lemongrass essential oil sells at Rs.800–1,500/kg. One hectare produces 100–200 kg oil/year. Revenue: Rs.1–3 lakh/ha/year from oil alone — with very low input cost.
🔄
4–6 Harvests/Year
Lemongrass is cut 4–6 times per year — every 60–75 days. Each cut yields a harvest. This gives continuous year-round income unlike seasonal fruit or grain crops.
🌵
Extremely Hardy
Grows on degraded, eroded, sloped and marginal land. Drought tolerant once established. Pest and disease resistant — needs almost no pesticide. Very low annual maintenance cost.
🏭
Guaranteed Industrial Demand
Essential oil companies, fragrance manufacturers, Patanjali, HUL, cosmetic and pharmaceutical companies all buy lemongrass oil year-round. Multiple buyers = no marketing problem.

CIMAP varieties are best: Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (CIMAP), Lucknow has developed India's best lemongrass varieties — Pragati and Cauvery specifically. Buy slips/planting material from CIMAP directly or from their registered farmers. Citral content above 75% fetches premium from pharmaceutical buyers.

🌍 Climate & Soil Requirements

Climate और Soil

  • Temperature: 20–35°C ideal for growth. Withstands 10–45°C. Frost kills young plants — protect in severe north Indian winters. Warm humid conditions give maximum oil content.
  • Rainfall: 700–2,500mm. Can be grown with irrigation in drier areas (6–8 irrigations/year). Actually produces higher oil content in slightly dry stress conditions compared to very wet conditions.
  • Soil: Extremely adaptable — sandy loam to clay, pH 5.0–8.0. Grows on degraded, eroded and slopes where other crops fail. Cannot tolerate waterlogging.
  • Best states: UP (Barabanki — "lemongrass hub of India"), Assam, Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha.

🌱 Planting Guide

Planting Guide

1
Planting material — slips from established clumps
Established clumps से slips।
Lemongrass is planted from slips (rooted tillers) separated from mature clumps. Each slip should be 25–30 cm long with roots attached. Trim leaves to 15 cm before planting. One hectare needs approximately 33,000–55,000 slips at standard spacing. Get certified slips from CIMAP or established lemongrass farmers.
2
Best planting: June–July monsoon onset
Best planting: June–July monsoon onset।
Plant at onset of monsoon when soil is moist — dramatically reduces establishment losses. Spacing: 60×30 cm (55,000 plants/ha) or 45×45 cm (49,000 plants/ha). Plant in furrows 8–10 cm deep. Firm soil around slips. First irrigation 3 days after planting if no rain. Establishment mortality: 10–15% — replant gaps within 3 weeks.
3
Field preparation — weed control is critical first year
Field preparation — first year weed control critical।
Deep plough, add FYM 10 tonnes/ha. Lemongrass establishment is slow in first 3 months — aggressive weeds can overwhelm young plants. Hand weeding at 30 and 60 days after planting is essential. After establishment, lemongrass naturally suppresses most weeds with its dense canopy.

💧 Irrigation & Fertilizer

Irrigation और Fertilizer

  • Irrigation: First year — every 15 days in dry periods. Established plantation (Year 2+) — every 20–30 days in non-monsoon months. Total: 6–8 irrigations/year. Drip irrigation increases oil yield by 20–30% and water savings 40%.
  • Nitrogen is most critical: N:P:K = 150:60:60 kg/ha/year. Nitrogen directly determines biomass and oil yield. Split in 3 doses — at planting, 45 days later and after each major harvest.
  • After each harvest — top dress N: Apply 25 kg urea per hectare immediately after each cut. This is the single most impactful nutrition practice for lemongrass yield.
  • Mulching: After harvest, spread the pressed (oil-extracted) grass residue back on field as mulch — conserves moisture and adds organic matter. Zero cost, high benefit.

✂️ Harvesting & Distillation

Harvesting और Distillation

1
First harvest at 90 days, then every 60–75 days
First harvest 90 days, फिर हर 60–75 days।
First harvest (Ratoon 1) at 90 days after planting. Subsequent harvests every 60–75 days — 4–6 cuts per year. Harvest in morning (higher oil content in morning hours). Cut at 15–20 cm above ground leaving growing points intact.
2
Wilt before distillation — increases oil recovery
Distillation से पहले wilt करें — oil recovery बढ़ती है।
After cutting, spread harvested grass in field for 4–8 hours (partial wilting). This breaks down oil-holding cells and dramatically improves distillation efficiency — increasing oil recovery by 20–30%. Don't over-dry — maximum 20–25% moisture loss before distilling.
3
Steam distillation — on-farm or custom hire
Steam distillation — on-farm या custom hire।
Steam distillation extracts oil from grass. On-farm stainless steel unit (250 kg capacity): Rs.80,000–1,50,000. Custom hire distillation units available in UP (Barabanki), Kerala and other lemongrass zones. Distillation time: 3–4 hours. Oil yield: 0.5–0.8% of fresh grass weight. Sell oil directly to buyers or through district cooperative.

Final tip: Lemongrass is ideal for farmers with degraded or marginal land and no assured market for conventional crops. The economics improve dramatically with own distillation (avoiding 30–40% custom hire cost) and direct sale to pharmaceutical/food companies rather than brokers. CIMAP (Lucknow) runs farmer support programs and can connect growers directly to buyers. Visit CIMAP for variety supply, distillation guidance and market linkage — it is one of India's best resources for medicinal and aromatic crop farmers.
