Coconut farming — hybrid D×T varieties, potassium nutrition, beetle management, intercropping और multi-decade income।
Coconut (Nariyal) is India's most multi-purpose tree — every part has economic value. India is the world's third-largest coconut producer after the Philippines and Indonesia, growing 21+ billion nuts annually. Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Goa are the major coconut states, but coconut is now being successfully cultivated much further inland in Maharashtra, Odisha and even parts of Rajasthan with drip irrigation. With fresh coconut, copra, coconut oil, neera, coir, toddy and wood all having markets, coconut offers farmers the most diversified single-crop income available in Indian agriculture.

🌍 Climate & Soil Requirements
Climate और Soil
- Temperature: 27°C mean annual temperature ideal. Tolerates 15–38°C. Below 15°C consistently = poor yield and growth.
- Rainfall: 1,500–2,500mm ideal, well-distributed. Can be grown with irrigation (drip) in lower rainfall areas. Coastal and humid conditions are naturally best.
- Soil: Sandy loam to laterite, well-drained, pH 5.5–8.0. Tolerates sandy coastal soils well. Cannot tolerate waterlogged soil or heavy clay without drainage management.
- Coastal vs inland: Coconut thrives naturally on coasts (Kerala, TN coast, Goa, AP coast). Inland cultivation in Karnataka, Maharashtra, Odisha now common with drip irrigation providing necessary moisture.
🌱 Planting Guide
🧪 Nutrition, Irrigation & Care
Nutrition, Irrigation और Care
Fertilizer per palm per year (bearing)
| Nutrient | Quantity | Application |
|---|---|---|
| FYM / Vermicompost | 50 kg | 2 splits — May–June and November |
| Nitrogen (Urea) | 500g (N 230g) | 3 splits annually |
| Phosphorus (SSP) | 320g (P 50g) | Annual basal |
| Potassium (MOP) | 1,200g (K 600g) | 3 splits — K is most critical |
| Magnesium (MgSO4) | 500g | Annual — prevents yellowing |
- Potassium is most critical: Coconut is one of the most potassium-demanding crops. Potassium deficiency = yellowing fronds, poor nut set, small nuts. Never skip K application.
- Drip irrigation: Standard in commercial orchards. 15–25L per tree per day during dry season. Saves 30–40% water vs basin irrigation.
- Chlorine needs: Coconut is one of few crops that requires chlorine as a micronutrient. Coastal coconuts naturally get it from sea spray. Inland coconuts may need NaCl (common salt) 2 kg/palm annually.
🐛 Pest & Disease Management
| Problem | Symptoms | Management |
|---|---|---|
| 🪲 Rhinoceros Beetle | Holes at crown, dead heart, frond damage | Remove dead/decaying palms. Naphthalene balls in crown. Release Baculovirus (biocontrol). |
| 🪲 Red Palm Weevil | Oozing liquid + foul smell from trunk, yellowing crown | Pheromone traps, Imidacloprid trunk injection, monitoring essential |
| 🍄 Bud Rot | Crown leaves wilt, rotten smell at apex | Remove infected tissue, Bordeaux paste application, avoid waterlogging |
| 🦠 Root Wilt (Kerala) | Yellowing, progressive decline — viral | No cure. Remove affected palms. Use tolerant varieties in Kerala. |
