🌍 Climate & Soil Requirements

Climate और Soil

  • Temperature: 25–30°C for vegetative growth, 16–21°C for fruit setting (cool nights improve fruit set). Above 35°C and below 10°C cause flower and fruit drop.
  • Rainfall: 600–1,250mm well-distributed. Too much rain causes Phytophthora wilt. Irrigation essential in dry periods especially at flowering and fruiting.
  • Soil: Well-drained sandy loam to clay loam, pH 6.5–8.0. Rich in organic matter. Waterlogged soil = Phytophthora wilt guaranteed. Raised beds in waterlogging-prone areas.

🌱 Nursery Raising & Transplanting

Nursery और Transplanting

1
Nursery sowing — raised beds or pro-trays
Raised beds या pro-trays में nursery।
Sow seeds in raised nursery beds or 98-cell pro-trays filled with cocopeat+perlite. Treat seeds with Thiram 2g/kg. Germination in 8–12 days. Seedlings ready at 5–6 weeks (4–6 leaf stage). Seed rate: 500g–750g/ha.
2
Transplant at 25–30 days for Kharif
Kharif के लिए 25–30 days पर transplant।
Kharif: Transplant July–August. Rabi: Transplant October–November. Spacing: 60×45 cm (standard) or 60×30 cm (high density). Transplant in evening, irrigate immediately. Provide shade for 3–5 days post-transplant.

💧 Irrigation & Fertilizer

Irrigation और Fertilizer

Irrigation Schedule

Growth StageIntervalCritical Notes
Establishment (0–30 days)Every 5–7 daysLight irrigation — avoid waterlogging
Vegetative growth (30–60 days)Every 7–10 daysIncrease gradually as plant grows
Flowering (60–90 days)Every 5–7 daysCritical — drought causes flower drop
Fruit developmentEvery 5–7 daysConsistent moisture prevents fruit cracking

Fertilizer (kg/ha)

  • Basal: FYM 25t + N:P:K = 50:50:50 kg/ha
  • 30 days: N 50 kg top dressing + 2% urea foliar
  • At flowering: N 50 kg + K 25 kg + Boron 0.2% foliar spray (improves fruit set)
  • Continued fruiting: NPK 13:0:45 at 5g/L foliar every 3 weeks

🐛 Pest & Disease Management

Pest और Disease Management

ProblemSymptomsManagement
🦠 Phytophthora WiltSudden wilting, stem darkening at base — most seriousPrevention: Raised beds, avoid overwatering. Chemical: Metalaxyl drench at first sign.
🦟 ThripsLeaf curl, silver streaks, vector for CVMV virusSpinosad or Fipronil spray. Blue sticky traps. Remove infected plants.
🦠 Chilli Mosaic Virus (CMV)Mosaic, distorted leaves, stunted plantNo cure — control thrips (vector). Remove infected plants. Use resistant varieties.
🔴 Anthracnose (Colletotrichum)Dark sunken spots on fruitsMancozeb spray, avoid excess humidity, good spacing
🦟 MitesCurled leaves, yellow stipplingAbamectin spray, increase humidity

🌾 Green & Red Chilli Harvesting

Green और Red Chilli Harvesting

ProductHarvest IndicatorHarvest FrequencyMarket
🟢 Green Chilli (fresh)Full size, firm, dark green — before color changeEvery 5–7 daysLocal vegetable market — immediate cash
🔴 Red Chilli (fresh)Fully red, still firmEvery 7–10 daysLocal market, processing units
🌶️ Dry Red ChilliFully red — allow to dry partially on plant then harvest2–3 pickingsAPMC mandi, powder mills, export

☀️ Drying, Processing & Market

Drying, Processing और Market

  • Sun drying: Spread red chilli on clean raised platforms in bright sun for 10–14 days. Turn daily. Dried chilli should have 10–12% moisture. Do NOT dry on bare ground — soil contamination reduces export quality.
  • Gunny/jute bags: Store dried chilli in clean jute bags. Stack in dry, ventilated storage. Fumigation with Aluminum Phosphide for long storage.
  • Market options: APMC mandi (daily price), direct to powder mills (forward contract), export houses (quality premium), FPO/cooperative for better collective price.
  • Value addition: Chilli powder processing at farm level gives 2–3x price vs selling whole dried chilli. Basic grinder unit Rs.15,000–50,000 — excellent ROI.

Final tip: Chilli is a long-duration perennial crop — the same plant produces for 2–3 years in South India. This means your initial investment (nursery, transplanting, establishment) is spread over 3 years, dramatically improving per-year profitability. Manage the first year carefully — the second and third year production come with much lower costs per unit.
