Aloe Vera commercial farming की complete guide — varieties, planting, harvesting, market buyers और Rs.2–4 lakh/hectare profitability।

Aloe Vera farming has emerged as one of India's most profitable low-water, low-input cash crops. Global demand for Aloe Vera gel in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals and food is growing at 8–10% annually. India is among the world's largest Aloe Vera producers with Rajasthan, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra leading production. A well-managed Aloe Vera farm is drought-tolerant, generates income for 5+ years after initial planting, and can achieve profits of Rs.2–4 lakh per hectare annually.

💰 Why Farm Aloe Vera?

Aloe Vera Farming क्यों करें?

🌵
Drought Tolerant
Aloe Vera survives on 400–600mm rainfall. Perfect for dry regions of Rajasthan, Gujarat, AP where many crops fail. Minimal irrigation needed after establishment.
💰
High Value
Fresh leaves Rs.3–8/kg. Processed gel Rs.15–30/kg. Aloe powder Rs.200–500/kg. One hectare produces 40–50 tonnes leaves per year — Rs.1.5–4 lakh revenue.
Low Input Cost
Minimal fertilizer, very low pesticide cost (natural pest resistance), low labor except harvest. Total input cost Rs.30,000–50,000/hectare — very low compared to most crops.
🔄
Perennial — Multiple Harvests
Plant once — harvest 4–5 times per year for 5+ years. No annual replanting cost. Pups produced naturally for field expansion at zero cost.

Always use Aloe barbadensis miller: Only this species is accepted by pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food processing buyers. Other Aloe species (Aloe ferox, etc.) have different gel composition and are NOT interchangeable for commercial buyers. Confirm species before buying planting material.
हमेशा Aloe barbadensis miller use करें — केवल यही species pharmaceutical, cosmetic और food buyers accept करते हैं। खरीदने से पहले species confirm करें।

🌍 Soil & Climate Requirements

Soil और Climate Requirements

  • Temperature: 20–40°C ideal. Frost kills Aloe Vera above ground. Not suitable for areas with heavy frost (high altitude Himachal, J&K). Grows well in all peninsular and western Indian states.
  • Rainfall: 400–1,200mm. Extremely drought-tolerant. The less rain, the more concentrated the gel. Over-irrigation dilutes gel quality and causes root rot.
  • Soil: Sandy loam to loamy soil with excellent drainage. pH 7.0–8.5. Waterlogging for even 2–3 days can kill entire field. Raised beds essential in heavy clay soils or areas with monsoon waterlogging.
  • Best states for commercial farming: Rajasthan (Jodhpur, Alwar, Barmer), Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Karnataka. All low-rainfall, well-drained soil regions.

🌱 Planting Guide for Commercial Aloe Vera

Commercial Aloe Vera Planting Guide

1
Field preparation
Field तैयार करें — deep ploughing, FYM, raised beds।
Deep plough 30–45 cm. Add 20–25 tonnes FYM or 5 tonnes vermicompost per hectare. Make raised beds 15–20 cm high (critical for drainage — root rot is the #1 cause of Aloe Vera crop failure). Beds 120–150 cm wide, furrows between beds for drainage.
2
Planting material — pups from healthy plants
Healthy plants से pups — best planting material।
Best planting material: 6–8 inch pups (root suckers) from certified disease-free mother plants. 1 hectare requires 10,000–12,000 pups at 90×60 cm spacing. Buy from NBPGR, CAZRI, state horticulture dept nurseries or certified private nurseries. Never buy from unverified sources.
3
Planting time and spacing
Best planting time: February–March या September–October।
Plant pups at 90×60 cm spacing (row × plant). This gives 18,500 plants/hectare. Alternatively, 60×60 cm for higher density (27,777 plants/ha) — used for leaf harvest focus. Plant at cool time of day. Water immediately after planting. Provide shade for 1 week if planting in summer.
4
First harvest at 8–12 months
8–12 months में first harvest।
First harvest after 8–12 months when outer leaves are 60–65 cm long and 1–1.5 kg weight. Harvest 3–4 outer leaves per plant (never more than 4 at a time). Plant recovers in 45–60 days for next harvest. 4–5 harvests per year thereafter.

💧 Irrigation & Fertilizer for Aloe Vera Farm

Aloe Vera Farm की Irrigation और Fertilizer

Irrigation

  • Drip irrigation strongly recommended: Aloe Vera + drip = ideal combination. Root zone wetted, leaves stay dry (preventing disease), 50% water saving vs flood irrigation.
  • First 3 months: Irrigate every 7–10 days. After establishment: every 15–20 days in dry season. No irrigation in monsoon if rainfall is regular.
  • Never overwater: Aloe Vera gelcontains 95% water — it stores what it needs. Overwatering dilutes gel quality and causes root rot instantly. "When in doubt — don't water" applies perfectly.

🌾 Harvesting Aloe Vera Leaves

Aloe Vera Leaves की Harvesting

  • Harvest mature outer leaves only: Only harvest leaves that are 60+ cm long and 1+ kg weight. Never harvest inner young leaves or damage the central growing point.
  • Cut at base with clean sharp knife: Cut leaf as close to base as possible at 45° angle. Clean cut = less disease entry, faster recovery. Never pull or twist leaves off.
  • Maximum 3–4 leaves per plant per harvest: Taking more weakens the plant and delays next harvest. 3–4 outer leaves every 45–60 days is the sustainable rhythm.
  • Morning harvest: Harvest in early morning — gel content and turgor pressure are highest before afternoon heat. Process within 24 hours of harvest for best gel quality.
  • Handle carefully: Aloe leaves are fragile — rough handling causes gel oxidation and yellowing. Transport upright in crates, not stacked horizontally.

Contract farming is best: Before planting, secure a buyback agreement with a processing company or Patanjali. This eliminates market risk completely. Several companies offer contract farming programs with guaranteed buyback price, technical support and sometimes free planting material. Contact your state horticulture department for empaneled companies in your region.

Profitability multiplier — value addition: Processing fresh leaves into gel or powder dramatically multiplies profit. 1 tonne fresh leaves → 300–400 kg gel (5–7x value). 1 tonne leaves → 10–15 kg powder (50x value). Even basic gel extraction unit (Rs.2–3 lakh investment) transforms Aloe Vera from a good crop to an excellent business.
