Zinnia (Zinnia elegans) is India's most cheerful and most rewarding annual flower — producing brilliant, long-lasting blooms in virtually every color of the rainbow from bright red and orange to soft pink, white, yellow, purple and multicolor combinations. Zinnia is the perfect flower for Indian conditions: it thrives in blazing heat, tolerates drought, grows rapidly from seed to bloom in just 6-8 weeks, and produces flowers continuously for months with minimal care. NASA selected Zinnia as one of the first flowers grown in space aboard the International Space Station — a testament to its adaptability and resilience. For any Indian gardener wanting maximum color with minimum effort, Zinnia is the number one recommendation.

🌱 Sowing
Feb–March + July–Aug
Two seasons in India
  • Two sowing seasons in India: February-March (for summer flowers, March-June) and July-August just after monsoon starts (for post-monsoon flowers, September-November). Both seasons work excellently. Zinnia is one of very few ornamental flowers that blooms happily in Indian peak summer heat.
  • Water at base — never on leaves: Zinnia's primary weakness is powdery mildew — a fungal disease triggered by water on leaves. Always water at the base, never overhead. Morning watering only. Good air circulation between plants prevents mildew. Once mildew appears — neem oil spray weekly.
  • Deadhead for continuous flowering: Remove spent flowers immediately — Zinnia stops producing new buds when seeds develop. Regular deadheading extends the flowering season by weeks. Cut stem just above the next leaf node for cleanest result.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Powdery mildew — most common zinnia problem. Causes: water on leaves, poor air circulation, humid conditions. Treatment: (1) Neem oil spray (5ml/L + soap) weekly. (2) Baking soda spray (1 tsp/L water) — disrupts fungal growth. (3) Remove badly affected leaves. Prevention: water at base only, plant 30 cm apart for air circulation, morning watering.
Allow some flowers to fully dry on the plant — petals dry and fall, center becomes brown and papery. Pluck dried flower head, rub between fingers — seeds fall out. Arrow-shaped flat seeds. Dry in shade 3-5 days, store in paper envelope in dry cool place. Seeds viable 2-3 years. One flower head = 50-100+ seeds. Free seeds for next season from your best plants.
Direct sow in garden bed or pot is better — Zinnia does not like root disturbance during transplanting. Sow 2-3 seeds per spot, 1 cm deep, thin to one strongest seedling when 5 cm tall. Germination: 5-7 days in warm Indian conditions. If transplanting from tray is necessary — handle roots very carefully and water thoroughly after transplanting.
