Heliconia (Heliconia spp.) — Lobster Claw or False Bird of Paradise — is one of the most dramatically exotic tropical plants available to Indian gardeners, producing extraordinary hanging or upright flower bracts in vivid combinations of red, orange, yellow and pink that look almost artificial in their sculptural perfection. Native to tropical Americas and the Pacific, Heliconias have naturalized beautifully in India's humid tropical regions — particularly Kerala, coastal Karnataka, Goa, Assam and West Bengal — where the combination of heat, humidity and rainfall creates ideal growing conditions. Heliconia is increasingly popular in Indian luxury hotel gardens, destination wedding venues and high-end landscape design as a statement tropical specimen.

💧 Heliconia Care — India Specific
- Remove spent stems completely: After a stem flowers and bracts age — cut the entire stem to ground level. This is critical — unlike many plants, Heliconia produces flowers only on new stems. Removing spent stems directs energy to producing new rhizome shoots which will flower. A cluttered Heliconia with many old stems produces fewer flowers.
- Rhizome division for propagation: Heliconia spreads by underground rhizomes — clumps expand freely in Indian conditions. Divide by digging and separating rhizome sections with at least one growing tip each. Best done in March-April before monsoon. One plant becomes a dramatic colony in 2-3 years.
- Best India regions: Kerala, Goa, coastal Karnataka — grow exceptionally well year-round. Mumbai, Chennai — excellent in monsoon, slow in dry season. Delhi, Rajasthan — challenging: too dry and cold in winter. Use as container plant moved indoors in winter for North India.
