Grow palak/spinach at home — any container, succession sowing, cut-and-come-again harvest and continuous supply tips.
Palak/spinach घर पर उगाएं — any container, succession sowing, cut-and-come-again harvest और continuous supply।
Palak (Spinach) is the easiest, fastest and most nutritious leafy vegetable to grow at home in India. From sowing to first harvest in just 20–25 days, it thrives in any container — even a repurposed dal tin — and produces continuously for 2–3 months with cut-and-come-again harvesting. Rich in iron, calcium, folate and vitamins, fresh home-grown spinach is one of the most valuable plants any Indian household can grow.
Palak India में घर पर उगाने का easiest, fastest और most nutritious leafy vegetable है। Sowing से first harvest सिर्फ 20–25 दिन, किसी भी container में — dal ke dabbbe में भी — और cut-and-come-again harvesting से 2–3 months तक continuous supply।

🪴 Soil & Container — Any Container Works!
Soil और Container — कोई भी Container काम करता है!
- Any container 6 inch deep: Spinach roots are only 4–6 inches deep. Old plastic containers, dal tins, vegetable crates, shoe boxes lined with plastic, thermocol boxes — all work. Drill 5–8 drainage holes in bottom.
- Soil mix: 50% vermicompost + 30% garden soil + 20% cocopeat. Spinach is a fast grower and needs nitrogen-rich, moisture-retaining soil.
- Width matters more than depth: Wide shallow containers grow more spinach per rupee than deep narrow pots. Maximize surface area, not depth.

💧 Watering, Light & Fertilizer
Watering, Light और Fertilizer
- Consistent moisture essential: Spinach wilts quickly in dry soil — and water-stressed spinach turns bitter and bolts faster. Keep soil consistently moist (not waterlogged). Water every 2 days in winter, daily in warmer periods.
- 3–5 hours sun is enough: Unlike most vegetables, spinach tolerates partial shade. East-facing balcony (morning sun only) works well. North-facing balconies with bright indirect light also acceptable — growth is slower but quality is fine.
- Nitrogen feeding for leafy growth: Spinach is harvested for leaves — it needs nitrogen above all else. Top dress with vermicompost (1 tbsp per pot) every 2 weeks. Or liquid nitrogen (diluted urea 1g/L) foliar spray every 10 days for fastest growth.
- Don't let it flower: When spinach starts sending up a flowering stalk — pinch it immediately. Flowering = leaves turn bitter = plant life ending. Remove flower stalks to extend harvest period.
✂️ Harvesting for Continuous Supply
Continuous Supply के लिए Harvesting
- First harvest at 20–25 days: When leaves are 8–10 cm long and you have 6–8 leaves per plant — harvest the outer leaves. Leave inner 3–4 leaves for plant to continue growing.
- Cut-and-come-again method: Cut outer leaves with scissors leaving the central growing point intact. Plant regrows and you can harvest again every 10–14 days for 2–3 months.
- Whole plant harvest: Alternatively, cut entire plant 2 cm above soil level. Plant may regrow — but cut-and-come-again from outer leaves is more productive.
- Harvest in morning: Morning harvest when leaves have highest water content — crispest texture and best nutrition.
- Succession timing: When your current crop starts to slow down (usually 6–8 weeks in), have a new batch that's 3 weeks old ready to take over. Seamless continuous supply.
🔧 Common Problems & Fixes
Common Problems और Solutions
| Problem | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| 🌡️ Bolting (flowering too soon) | Heat above 28°C or plant stressed | Sow only Oct–Feb. Provide shade if temperature rises. Pinch flower stalk immediately when it appears. |
| 😮 Bitter leaves | Heat stress, water stress, or flowering | Consistent watering, cool season only, pinch flowers |
| 🟡 Yellow leaves | Nitrogen deficiency or overwatering | Top dress vermicompost. Check drainage. Liquid nitrogen spray if needed. |
| 🐛 Leaf miners | Tiny tunnels inside leaves | Remove affected leaves. Neem oil spray as preventive. Not serious if mild. |
| 📏 Slow growth, pale leaves | Insufficient nitrogen or light | Liquid fertilizer with nitrogen. Move to brighter spot. |
