🪴 Soil Mix & Pot for Aloe Vera

Pot

Aloe Vera needs extremely well-draining, sandy soil. It is a succulent — its roots rot immediately in heavy, moisture-retaining soil. This is the most critical part of Aloe Vera care.

Terracotta — breathable
📐 Pot Width
Wide, shallow preferred
Wide और shallow — Aloe spreads wide
  • Terracotta pot mandatory: Terracotta allows soil to breathe and dries faster — perfect for Aloe Vera. Plastic pots retain moisture too long.
  • Drainage holes: Minimum 3–4 large drainage holes. No exceptions.
  • Bottom gravel layer: 2 inch gravel or broken terracotta at bottom before soil.
  • Never use plain garden soil: It compacts and holds water — kills Aloe roots in 2–4 weeks.

💧 Watering Guide — Most Critical Skill

Watering — सबसे Critical चीज़

Aloe Vera stores water in its thick leaves — it can survive weeks without watering. Overwatering kills Aloe Vera faster than any other problem. When in doubt — don't water. Wait another week.

SeasonWatering FrequencyHow to Check
☀️ Summer (Mar–Jun)Every 10–14 daysStick finger 3 inches deep — must be completely dry
🌧️ Monsoon (Jul–Sep)Every 21–30 days (or skip if it rains)Check soil AND weather — monsoon humidity slows drying
❄️ Winter (Oct–Feb)Every 21–30 daysSoil must be bone dry + wait 3–5 more days
⚠️
Watering method: Water deeply and infrequently. When you water — water fully until it drains from bottom. Then don't water again until soil is completely dry 3–4 inches deep. The "soak and dry" method is perfect for Aloe. Never let Aloe sit in water or wet saucer.
"Soak and dry" method — पूरा पानी दें जब तक नीचे से निकले। फिर 3–4 इंच गहराई तक completely dry होने तक wait करें। कभी भी wet saucer में न रखें।

☀️ Sunlight Requirements for Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera के लिए Sunlight

  • Ideal: 4–6 hours of direct or bright indirect light daily. South or East-facing window or balcony is perfect.
  • Summer above 42°C: Move to bright indirect light or provide afternoon shade (12–4 PM). Intense direct sun above 42°C causes leaf bleaching.
  • Low light: Aloe survives but grows very slowly and gel content decreases. Leaves become thin and bend outward looking for light.
  • Sign of too much sun: Leaves turn red or brown-orange on sun-facing side — beautiful but means slight stress. Move to less intense light or morning sun only.
  • Sign of too little sun: Pale green, elongated leaves reaching toward light. Move to brighter spot.

🧪 Fertilizer Guide for Aloe Vera

Guide

Aloe Vera is a very light feeder — it evolved in poor, nutrient-sparse desert soils. Over-fertilizing causes soft, mushy leaves with reduced gel quality and increased pest susceptibility.

  • Best fertilizer: 1 tbsp vermicompost once every 2 months. That's genuinely all Aloe needs.
  • For faster growth: Diluted liquid seaweed extract (2ml/L) applied to soil once every 6–8 weeks during growing season (March–October).
  • Never use chemical fertilizers: Chemical N-heavy fertilizers make Aloe leaves soft and watery with poor gel quality. Avoid entirely.
  • No fertilizer in winter: November–February — Aloe grows very slowly. No feeding needed.

🌱 Propagation from Pups — Free New Plants

Pups से Free नए Aloe Vera Plants

Aloe Vera produces "pups" — small baby plants growing from the base of the mother plant. These can be separated and potted to make new plants for free. Pups should be separated when they are at least 3–4 inches tall.

1
Identify and wait for pups to be 3–4 inches
Pups smaller than 3 inches don't have sufficient roots yet. Separating too early = low survival rate. Be patient.
2
Unpot mother plant and gently separate pup
Remove mother plant from pot. Gently work the pup away from the mother using your fingers. If connected by thick rhizome, cut cleanly with a sharp, sterilized knife. Each pup should have its own roots.
3
Let cut end dry for 24–48 hours (callous)
Leave the cut pup in a dry, shaded spot for 24–48 hours. This allows the cut end to form a callous — preventing rot when planted. This step is critical for Aloe propagation success.
4
Plant in dry soil — don't water for 1 week
Plant in Aloe soil mix. Do NOT water for 7–10 days — this encourages roots to search for moisture and establish strongly. After 1 week, water very lightly. Full care routine after 3–4 weeks.

🔧 Common Aloe Vera Problems & Fixes

Common Problems और Solutions

ProblemCauseFix
🟡 Yellow, mushy leavesOverwatering + root rotStop watering immediately, unpot, cut rotten roots, repot in dry fresh mix
🟤 Brown, dry leaf tipsUnderwatering OR too much sunWater more deeply when you do water; provide afternoon shade in peak summer
🔴 Red/orange leavesToo much direct sun (slight stress)Move to morning sun only — actually indicates gel potency is high
📏 Leggy, falling overInsufficient lightMove to brighter spot immediately
🐛 Mealybugs in soilRoot mealybugsUnpot, wash roots, drench in neem cake solution, repot fresh mix
💧 Leaves feel hollow/thinSevere underwateringWater deeply once, then resume normal schedule
🍂 Leaves falling off at baseNatural shedding of old lower leavesNormal — remove dead leaves to prevent rot
🌵
Final tip: Aloe Vera thrives on neglect. The biggest mistake Indian gardeners make is watering it like a regular plant — every 2–3 days. Treat it like the desert plant it is: water deeply, then forget about it for 2–3 weeks. The less you water, the better your Aloe will look.
